I have a lot of love for Apple products. Used them for years and still do, but I am more intrigued with Linux. Linux is perfect Operating System for me now because I recently took up coding.

Disclaimer this may sound silly, I never correlated an operating system is code. (Don’t tell anyone.)

Switching to Linux as my main OS helped reinforce the coding concepts I’m learning. Linux allows you to look under the hood. So of course it’s code, but using closed source operating systems I hardly tinkered around with operating system source or configuration files.

Insert open source Linux. BOOM, freedom to mess around and break things.

To my surprise though, the Linux desktop environment has improved greatly. Then it lacked the appeal of Mac OS X and using the command line was a must. Two things I wasn’t interested in.

I found out about POP!_OS from a google search and it’s been a game changer.

POP!_OS by System 76 is a Linux Operating System. It’s Ubuntu based and improves on an already stable operating system. The desktop improvements are more modern.

The Desktop looks incredible and works for non tech users. The average user may never touch the command line. I’m confident my grandparents could use this operating system without questions.

What initially led me to try out POP!_OS is this quote on their website:

Pop!_OS is an operating system for STEM and creative professionals who use their computer as a tool to discover and create.

I’m a creative and I like trying out products geared towards “creatives.”

Here are a few of my favorite POP!_OS features:

  • I love the desktop environment. I’ve added a custom wallpaper, icons, and mouse cursor so far. Here’s my desktop:

  • Friendly to system resources. I rarely run out of ram. I can use multiple applications and ram usage is under 5-6 gig.

  • No bloatware or spying software. Good for privacy.

  • Linux has a great community aspect. Usually you can find answers to problems quickly using twitter, reddit, etc.

If you’re in the market for a new computer or tired of Windows lol. I’d recommend creating a bootable USB of POP!_OS and see if you like it.
